“The Batman”: That reveals the first trailer about the dark DC film
The first trailer for “The Batman” hit like a bomb. We took another close look at the preview video and analyzed it scene by scene. Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman: There’s a lot in there …
A new trailer for “Wonder Woman 2”, a first trailer for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”, new information about “Suicide Squad 2” and “Black Adam” and much more: The DC FanDome last weekend had some for comic fans happy surprises ready.
The first trailer for “The Batman” left the most impression on social media (and also here on ). We took another close look at the preview.
The trailer begins with a completely masked figure wrapping a corpse with duct tape. At first glance, it is unclear who it is, but as the trailer continues, it becomes clear: It has to be Riddler (Paul Dano) cmovieshd. Stick and green suit with question mark motif as in the comics (or in Jim Carrey from “Batman Forever”) are missing, but the killer leaves puzzles at the scene that are addressed to Batman (Robert Pattinson).
Batman and the Police
The trailer also seems to show that the police, in the form of James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), are initially working with Batman. Apparently that will change as the film progresses. Later scenes show Batman in a scramble with several cops and on the run while the police are shooting at him. At the same time, of course, there is a possibility that these are corrupt cops.
The bath cave
The bath cave in “The Batman” is apparently little more than an abandoned subway station or something similar. No high-tech gadgets and no trophy collection, just a few computers and training equipment and Batman’s vehicles.
“The Batman” will play as a masked avenger in Batman’s second year and accordingly also show many of his opponents and comrades-in-arms in their early years. This applies to Selina Kyle alias Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), who appears here as a burglar in two short scenes (with a hat reminiscent of cat ears) and to clash with Batman.
And above all, it also applies to Oswald Cobblepot alias Pinguin, who is played in “The Batman” by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell and, according to director Matt Reeves, is only just making a name for himself in Gotham. Apart from the long nose, nothing is reminiscent of a penguin.
Rumor has it that the Joker is mentioned in “The Batman”, before Batman’s archenemy then also plays a bigger role in “The Batman 2” and “The Batman 3”. But it is rather unlikely that Batman beat up a group of Joker henchmen in the trailer, even if they have white make-up and red-painted mouths. Maybe this is simply a gang in Gotham.
The Batmobile was previously unveiled by Matt Reeves and is now shown briefly in action in the trailer. In “The Batman” it is neither a comic bat vehicle nor a converted tank, but “only” a pimped up muscle car.
Batman and Riddler
In the last moments of the trailer there is an interesting revelation: “You are part of it too” whispers (presumably) the Riddler to Batman. The second attack by the Riddler in his car at the funeral earlier in the trailer suggests that the Riddler might have guessed Batman’s identity, as Bruce Wayne is there in civilian clothes.
And on the DC FanDome panel for “The Batman,” Matt Reeves revealed that the Wayne family had something to do with Gotham’s dark past. Maybe these are the lies the Riddler is trying to expose.
We’ll find out in a good year. “The Batman” is due to hit German cinemas on September 30, 2021.
